NYC Guide: Shuka

NYC Guide: Shuka

SHUKA NYC

Address | 38 MacDougal St, New York, NY 10012

After weeks of dropping temperatures, rain, and wind storms circumstances aligned perfectly and we found ourselves in NYC with a perfectly temperate 70°F, sunny spring day with just a light breeze. It was the perfect weather to enjoy the long walk from Central Park South down to SoHo to enjoy a leisurely lunch at Shuka. Shuka is one of those effortlessly vibrant New York City restaurants that captures both energy and ease. Tucked into SoHo, the moment you enter Shuka you feel the lively, sun-washed escape that it is. The service is prompt and friendly. Given that it was such a a nice day the doors that led to the outdoor dining were left open allowing the breeze, light, and conversation from the outside in perfectly blending the indoor and outdoor space. As vegans, we really enjoy good Mediterranean cuisine and the menu at Shuka— with bold plant-based forward items—did not disappoint. The cocktail menu offered a nice array of options and so our order began there…

TUNIS

The TUNIS cocktail is a beautifully layered experience—both refreshing and intriguingly complex. Built on a base of tequila, it opens with a bright burst of lemon that feels instantly uplifting. What sets it apart, though, is the delicate infusion of Earl Grey, lending a soft tannic depth and subtle bergamot aroma that lingers elegantly. The fig leaf adds a green, almost coconut-like warmth, wrapping the drink in a gentle, sun-soaked softness, while the Cardamaro introduces a bittersweet herbal note that ties everything together.

Each sip evolves: citrusy and crisp at first, then slowly unfolding into something more rounded and aromatic. It feels thoughtful and transportive, like a cocktail meant to be savored rather than rushed. The TUNIS is both modern and nostalgic—perfect for lingering conversations, golden hour light, and those moments when you want a drink that tells a story.

CHICORY SALAD

The chicory salad is a vibrant balance of crisp, bitter, sweet, and herbaceous flavors—each bite thoughtfully composed. The chicory offers a refreshing bitterness that feels clean and palate-awakening, softened beautifully by slices of juicy Bosc pear. Their mellow sweetness adds a silky contrast, while bursts of mint and dill bring a bright, aromatic lift that keeps the salad feeling light and dynamic.

Candied walnuts introduce a satisfying crunch and a touch of caramelized richness, grounding the dish with warmth. Then comes the pomegranate vinaigrette—tangy, slightly sweet, and jewel-toned—coating everything in a glossy finish that ties the ingredients together effortlessly.

It’s the kind of salad that feels both elegant and nourishing, perfect as a starter or a centerpiece for a light meal. Fresh yet indulgent, it invites you to slow down and appreciate how beautifully simple ingredients can come together.

ZA’ATAR FRIES

We love a long lunch of cocktails, salad and fries. Shuka’s Za’atar fries are irresistibly crisp and fragrant, a simple pleasure elevated by bold seasoning. Each golden fry is dusted with the earthy, herbaceous blend of thyme, sesame, and sumac, adding a bright, tangy finish. The aroma alone is enticing, warm and savory with a hint of citrus. Perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft within, they’re endlessly snackable—best enjoyed shared, lingering over good conversation and one more bite. Be warned the serving is very large! Enough for 4 people.

Shuka is a NYC restaurant that has definitely made it on our list of go-to dining spots in the city. The beautiful casual setting, the cocktails with layered flavors and the perfectly seasoned dishes make this a spot we cannot wait to return to and eat our way through more items on the menu!
