The Best Way to Spend a Fall Day: The Hamptons | Sagaponack
We love hosting guests in the autumn in the Hamptons. The summer crowds have thinned, the air is crisp, and the villages take on a quieter charm that makes even an ordinary weekend feel like a little getaway. Lynette’s sister is visiting from Washington State and staying in NYC for a few days. After spending the day in the city together Lynette and Sabrina took a Jitney to the Hamptons so we could host Sabrina for an overnight stay and a day in Sagaponack.
If you’re looking for a mini getaway from NYC this fall, the Hamptons are a wonderful place to escape for a change of scenery. From charming local shops and crisp beach walks to leisurely wine tastings and cozy seasonal breakfasts, there’s so much to enjoy beyond the summer season. Here’s how we spent the perfect fall day in Sagaponack, along with a few of our favorite local gems and suggestions to help you plan your own autumn getaway to the Hamptons.
The Best Way to Spend a Fall Day: The Hamptons | A Seasonal Breakfast at Home
If you’re lucky to spend the night and wake up in a Hamptons home, we suggest starting the day with a relaxed and cozy seasonal breakfast at home. On this occassion, we let a fresh autumn breeze run through the house from the back deck while we prepared a tray of deliciously seaseond baked pears. We simply washed, halved, and cored the pears then sprinkled with pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and a little sugar to get a nice caramelized topping. After baking for about 20 minutes, we served with scoops of vegan yogurt and roasted maple nuts. It was a lovely autumn breakfast, with warm, tender pears and crunchy nuts adding just the right amount of seasonal flavor. A slow morning allowed us to enjoy the changing leaves on the trees outside the windows and catch up. If you’re coming in just for the day be sure to grab a coffee or a small bite for your journey to the city…
The Best Way to Spend a Fall Day: The Hamptons | Coffee & Fall Decor at Sagaponack General Store
Address | 542 Sagg Main St, Sagaponack, NY 11962
After breakfast, we headed out to the post office to deliver letters we had spent the morning writing and to check our post box. Our USPS store is conveniently located next door to Sagaponack General Store. Naturally, this was the perfect excuse to pick up Americanos and spend a little time enjoying the shop. If you’re arriving for the day, start with a late breakfast here. They have beautiful breakfast sandwiches, wraps, salads, pastry, and more! It’s also a great spot to find unique gifts and gourmet goods.
The store was dressed for the season, with pumpkins and Halloween decorations adding vibrant autumn color throughout the space. I love discovering these little seasonal touches around the Hamptons. Even a quick coffee stop can become part of the day's adventure when the shops embrace the spirit of fall.
The Best Way to Spend a Fall Day: The Hamptons | A Crisp Autumn Walk at
Sagg Main Beach
Address | 1200 Sagg Main St, Sagaponack, NY 11962
With our warm coffees in hand, we made our way to our favorite local beach, Sagg Main Beach, for a walk along the shore. We were lucky to have a gorgeous day, the sun was shining, and a cool autumn breeze reminded us that summer was well behind us. Be sure to dress in layers! Despite the cold, Lynette enjoyed the sand and sea barefooted.
The waves were wild and beautiful, rolling onto the beach beneath the bright autumn sky. There is something wonderfully restorative about walking along the ocean this time of year. The beach feels more peaceful, the air is refreshing, and the changing seasons give the landscape a different kind of beauty.
It was the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors before heading to our next stop.
The Best Way to Spend a Fall Day: The Hamptons An Afternoon of Wine at Wölffer Estate Vineyard
Address | 139 Sagg Road, Sagaponack NY 11962
When you visit the Hamptons in the fall we find that Wölffer Estate Vineyard tasting room is one of the best local destinations to enjoy the full Hamptons experience. The estate’s romantic setting, sweeping vineyard views, and enjoyable wine and bites makes for a joyous and memorable experience. We settled in to enjoy wine flights and a couple of small bites, making an afternoon of tasting and conversation.
We ordered the mezze platter to share and the soft, warm pretzel served with honey mustard. The team was very accommodating of our vegan and gluten-free requests, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Having options and staff who are willing to help makes such a difference when dining with different dietary needs.
We took our time with the wine flights, enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, and let the afternoon unfold without rushing. Wölffer is a lovely place to linger, especially in autumn, when the vineyard offers a different atmosphere from the busy summer season.
A Farewell & the Perfect Fall Day in the Hamptons
After the winery we returned to our place for a little more time relaxing to for Sabrina to gather her overnight bag. We headed to Bridgehampton and visited the gourmet shops, jewelry stores, and clothing boutiques before sitting for one last coffee and sending her off on a Jitney back to the city! While that was the end to our day, here are a few more ideas for a longer day….
The Best Way to Spend a Fall Day: The Hamptons | Extending the Day
If you’re looking to add a little more to your fall itinerary, Sagaponack and the surrounding villages offer plenty of ways to enjoy the season. Golf enthusiasts can spend part of the day at Poxabogue Golf Center, a relaxed local spot for a round of golf. It’s a lovely way to get outside and enjoy the crisp autumn air while taking in the quieter side of the Hamptons.
For something a little more leisurely, stop by Sagaponack Farm Distillery for drinks and a taste of the local spirits scene. It’s a fun addition to an autumn afternoon, whether you’re visiting with friends or looking for a different experience beyond the beaches and vineyards.
Where to Have Dinner in Bridgehampton
If you plan to stay through dinner, we recommend heading to nearby Bridgehampton, where you’ll find several excellent options for an evening out. Elaia Estiatoria is a wonderful choice if you’re in the mood for Greek cuisine, while Almond is a longtime Hamptons favorite known for its seasonal, locally inspired menu and relaxed atmosphere.
For a more refined dining experience, consider Topping Rose House, home to Jean-Georges' restaurant. Set in a beautiful historic property, it offers an elegant way to end the day and makes dinner feel like a special occasion. Whichever you choose, staying for dinner is a lovely way to extend your Hamptons getaway and enjoy a little more of the East End after a day exploring the area.
