Sægreifinn | The Sea Baron

On our last full night in Reykjavik, we decided to dine at Sægreifinn (the Sea Baron). Located by the old harbour is a small green fisherman’s hut with a line out the door. Both locals and tourists flock to this Reykjavik favorite for fresh seafood and the famous lobster soup. When you enter, you’ll find a case with a variety of fresh fish on skewers ready to be grilled. They offer a variety of Icelandic fish—ling fish, wolf fish—as well as salmon and shrimp and cod. You can also choose from vegetable and potato skewers that are grilled on order to accompany your meal. We decided to try the wolf fish, salmon, and potato and veggie skewers and of course, the famous lobster soup along with some Icelandic beers.

After you place your order, you will be seated upstairs. On the walk up the narrow winding stairs you’ll feel like you’ve entered a home as you pass framed photos of the staff in costume and celebrating, taxidermic arctic fox and seal, and a life sized doll of the sea baron watching the comings and goings. At the top of the stairs there are a few communal tables. The setting was cozy and lively and the perfect low key experience to warm a cold night in Reykjavik. The lobster soup was classic with a good flavor and the lobster was the perfect texture. The soups are served with warm bread and butter. The fish skewers were great with a bit of smoky char. When in Reykjavik, I definitely recommend that you stop by the Sea Baron Restaurant for a great meal and a great time.
