Café Sabarsky A Taste of Vienna in NYC

Café Sabarsky A Taste of Vienna in NYC

Café Sabarsky | Located in Neue Galerie New York

Address | 1048 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028

On a recent appointment to the Austrian Consulate in NYC’s Upper East Side, we decided to stay on theme for the day and enjoy a traditional coffee at Café Sabarsky located in the Neue Galerie on Fifth Avenue. Temperatures hit 80 degrees Fahrenheit and it was a perfectly beautiful day to stroll alongside Central Park with its billowing full green trees and fresh blossoms as we made our way to the cafe.

Café Sabarsky is a traditional Viennese-style café with windows that look out to Central Park. The Neue Galerie is a museum dedicated to early 20th-century German and Austrian art and design, and Café Sabarsky reflects this cultural focus. Named after the early 20th-century Austrian art collector and philanthropist, Serge Sabarsky, the café captures the essence of Viennese café culture. The interior design, menu offerings, and ambiance all evoke the charm and sophistication of traditional Viennese cafés.

The menu at Café Sabarsky features classic Viennese dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, Sachertorte, and various types of strudel, along with a selection of coffees, teas, and pastries. The café also offers a curated list of Austrian wines and beers to complement the dining experience. We visited for a coffee break so we indulged in desserts and beverages. I had a regular coffee and Lynette ordered two classic Viennese beverages the Kaiser Mélange and a glass of Sekt. Kaiser Mélange is espresso topped with whipped cream. It’s a rich and tasty combination. In Vienna, Sekt, the Austrian sparkling wine, is celebrated for its crispness and elegance, often enjoyed during festive occasions and social gatherings. Its popularity in Vienna makes it a cherished beverage choice for locals and visitors alike seeking a taste of Austrian culture.

For desserts we tried two—of several very tempting!—options. We had the Adele Schnitte—passion fruit, coconut mousse cake, and the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte—chocolate cake with cream & cherries. The Adele Schnitte was a delightful balance of tropical flavors and creamy indulgence, inspired by the elegance of Viennese pastry tradition. The Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, another beloved Viennese classic, was delicious with the tart cherries infused with Kirschwasser, embodying the essence of indulgence in every bite.

Café Sabarsky is known not only for its delicious food and drink but also for its elegant and inviting atmosphere. It's a popular destination for locals and visitors alike who want to experience a taste of Vienna in the heart of New York City.
