NYC Guide: Vegan Doughnuts at Dough Doughnuts

NYC Guide: Vegan Doughnuts at Dough Doughnuts

Dough Doughnuts, a beloved artisanal bakery based in Brooklyn, has become a staple of New York City’s vibrant doughnut scene since its founding in 2010. Known for its oversized, handcrafted doughnuts made with high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, Dough offers a unique twist on classic flavors while introducing innovative combinations inspired by global influences. From rich Hibiscus to decadent Café au Lait, each doughnut boasts a light, fluffy texture and bold, unforgettable taste.

What sets Dough apart is its commitment to craftsmanship and creativity. The doughnuts are made in small batches using a traditional brioche-style dough, resulting in a perfectly tender crumb. Seasonal specials, like Passionfruit and Pumpkin Spice, keep the menu fresh and exciting, while year-round favorites such as Nutella and Lemon Poppyseed maintain a loyal following.

With locations in Flatbush, Industry City, and a presence at Smorgasburg, Dough has expanded beyond its original Bed-Stuy flagship, bringing its irresistible treats to more neighborhoods. The brand’s vibrant, Instagram-worthy designs and collaborations with local businesses—like Blue Bottle Coffee—have further cemented its status as a must-visit NYC destination.

A Delicious Journey to Dough Doughnuts in Chelsea: Trying Their Vegan Offerings

There’s something undeniably magical about a perfectly crafted doughnut—crisp on the outside, pillowy on the inside, bursting with flavor in every bite. As longtime fans of Dough Doughnuts, we were thrilled to head to their Chelsea location and sample their selection of vegan doughnuts. Being both doughnut enthusiasts and plant-based eaters, we knew we had to make the trip.

On a rainy morning we headed with umbrellas up to Dough’s Chelsea location, nestled in the bustling heart of Manhattan. The shop had the same charming, minimalist aesthetic as their other outposts—clean white walls, a sleek counter displaying rows of beautifully glazed doughnuts, and the irresistible aroma of freshly fried dough lingering in the air. The vegan options were clearly labeled, and after much deliberation (and some serious drooling), we settled on three flavors: Strawberry, Passion Fruit, and Cinnamon Sugar.

First Impressions: The Texture Test

One of the biggest concerns with vegan pastries is texture—without eggs or dairy, some baked goods can turn out dense or gummy. But from the first bite, it was clear that Dough had nailed it. Each doughnut was light, airy, and fluffy, with just the right amount of chewiness. The exterior had a delicate crispness, giving way to a tender crumb that melted in the mouth.

We started with the Cinnamon Sugar, a classic that’s often a good benchmark for a doughnut’s base quality. The balance of sweetness and spice was perfect—not overly sugary, with a warm, comforting cinnamon finish. The texture was so close to the traditional brioche-style doughnuts Dough is famous for that we almost forgot it was vegan.

Next up: the Strawberry. Topped with a vibrant pink glaze and dotted with freeze-dried strawberry bits, this one was as visually appealing as it was delicious. The glaze had a bright, fruity tang that complemented the rich dough without being cloying. The strawberry flavor tasted natural, not artificial, with a slight tartness that kept it refreshing.

Finally, we dug into the Passion Fruit, arguably the most unique of the three. The tropical glaze was bold and zesty, with that signature passion fruit tang that dances between sweet and sour. It was an exciting departure from typical doughnut flavors, and we loved how the fruity acidity cut through the dough’s richness.

Flavor Breakdown: What Stood Out?

1. Strawberry – A Sweet, Summery Delight

  • Glaze: Fresh, fruity, with a slight tartness

  • Texture: Perfectly soft with a slight crunch from the strawberry bits

  • Overall: A well-balanced, not-too-sweet option that would pair wonderfully with coffee

2. Passion Fruit – A Tropical Escape

  • Glaze: Tangy, vibrant, with a bold citrusy punch

  • Texture: Smooth glaze over the fluffy dough created a great contrast

  • Overall: The most adventurous of the three—great for those who love bold, exotic flavors

3. Cinnamon Sugar – A Timeless Classic

  • Coating: Warm, spiced, with just the right amount of sweetness

  • Texture: Slightly crisp exterior, ultra-soft inside

  • Overall: A simple yet flawless execution of a traditional favorite

How Do They Compare to Non-Vegan Doughnuts?

As someone who has tried Dough’s regular offerings (like their famous Hibiscus and Dulce de Leche), I was curious to see how the vegan versions stacked up. Surprisingly, the difference was minimal. The dough itself was just as cloud-like and buttery (thanks to high-quality plant-based fats), and the glazes were just as flavorful. If anything, the vegan doughnuts felt slightly lighter, making it easier to indulge in more than one (not that we needed an excuse).

The Verdict: Are Dough’s Vegan Doughnuts Worth It?

Absolutely. Dough has managed to create vegan doughnuts that are indistinguishable in texture from their classic ones while maintaining the same level of creativity and flavor excellence. Whether you’re vegan or just looking to try something new, these doughnuts are a must-try.

Final Ratings:

  • Texture: 10/10 (Light, fluffy, perfect crumb)

  • Flavor: 9.5/10 (Strawberry and Passion Fruit were standout hits)

  • Innovation: 9/10 (Love the unique tropical twist on the Passion Fruit)

  • Overall Experience: 9.5/10 (A vegan doughnut that doesn’t compromise on quality)

Would We Go Back?

Without a doubt. Dough’s Chelsea location is now firmly on our list of go-to spots for a sweet treat. Next time, we’re eyeing the Mocha Crunch and Lemon Poppyseed vegan options—because when a doughnut is this good, why stop at three?

If you’re in NYC and craving an exceptional vegan doughnut (or just an incredible doughnut in general), Dough Doughnuts in Chelsea is well worth the visit. Just be prepared to leave with a box full of extras—resistance is futile.
