When my son and I set out to plan a memorable golf day in San Juan, we had two priorities: great golf and breathtaking views. The Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest, Beach & Golf Resort in Puerto Rico checked all the boxes. Nestled between the lush El Yunque Rainforest and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, this resort offered not just one, but two world-class golf courses—the Ocean Course and the River Course. Though we were initially hoping to play the famed Ocean Course, it was temporarily closed for aeration during our visit. Instead, we booked a round on the River Course, and it turned out to be an incredible experience that exceeded our expectations.

From the moment we stepped onto the first tee, we were greeted by spectacular mountain views, with the towering peaks of El Yunque providing a dramatic backdrop. The course itself was beautifully laid out, winding through tropical foliage and alongside tranquil water features. Unlike some more punishing courses, the River Course was pleasantly flat, making it an enjoyable walk and a great choice for golfers of all skill levels. The fairways were well-maintained, and the greens rolled true, offering just the right amount of challenge without being overly frustrating.

One of the highlights of our round was the abundant wildlife. At one point, we spotted several turtles basking near a water hazard, adding a fun and unexpected touch to our game. The serene atmosphere, combined with the sounds of nature, made the round feel like a true escape. Even though we missed out on the oceanfront holes of the Ocean Course, the River Course’s tranquil beauty and lush surroundings more than made up for it.

Beyond the golf, the resort itself was a fantastic place to unwind. The combination of great golf, stunning scenery, and quality time with my son made this trip unforgettable.

Whether you play the Ocean Course or the River Course, you’re guaranteed breathtaking views, superb course conditions, and a round you’ll remember long after the final putt drops. For us, it was the perfect golf getaway—one we’ll definitely be revisiting in the future.
