Tucked into the heart of the West Village, Jajaja Mexicana offers a vibrant, plant-based take on Mexican cuisine that feels both elevated and approachable. We visited the West Village location and immediately loved the warm, energetic atmosphere—perfect for a relaxed lunch or a lively dinner with friends. The menu is entirely vegan, yet deeply rooted in bold, traditional flavors, reimagined with creativity and care. From refreshing cocktails to richly layered moles and bright, tangy verdes, every dish feels thoughtful and satisfying. It’s the kind of place where you can indulge fully, whether you’re vegan or simply curious, and leave feeling both inspired and comforted. A must-visit for anyone exploring the ever-evolving vegan dining scene in New York City.
We began our meal at Jajaja Mexicana with something light, refreshing, and a little celebratory. A chilled glass of sparkling water sets the tone, crisp and cleansing, while the Prickly Pear Paloma brings a vibrant burst of flavor. Made with smooth reposado tequila, bright grapefruit, a hint of Aperol, fresh lime, and the subtle tang of cactus tepache, it’s both playful and sophisticated. The drink feels perfectly balanced—slightly bitter, gently sweet, and deeply refreshing—waking up the palate and easing us into the meal ahead with a relaxed, festive energy.
We started our meal at Jajaja Mexicana, with the Pozole Negra, a dish that feels both comforting and elevated. The rich, deeply flavored broth is layered with tender corn mote, smoky charred onions, hearty plant-based “steak,” crisp cabbage, and earthy shiitake mushrooms. Each bite is complex and satisfying, balancing warmth with texture. Paired with the empanadas de frijol, red and crisp with a savory bean filling, it becomes the perfect introduction to the meal. Together, they set a tone that is soulful, vibrant, and rooted in bold, thoughtful flavors that linger long after the first course.
The Enchiladas Mole at Jajaja Mexicana are a standout, rich with depth and comforting flavor. Filled with tender jackfruit carnitas, the enchiladas are smothered in a velvety mole made from guajillo chiles, cacao, and toasted sesame, creating a perfect balance of smoky, slightly sweet, and savory notes. The coco queso and a drizzle of sour cream add a creamy contrast that ties everything together beautifully. Served alongside fluffy Spanish rice, each bite feels indulgent yet thoughtfully composed. It’s a dish that lingers, inviting you to slow down and savor every layer of flavor and texture.
The Enchiladas Verde at Jajaja Mexicana were a bright, refreshing contrast to the richer dishes on the table. Filled with tender jackfruit carnitas, they’re covered in a vibrant tomatillo and cilantro sauce that delivers the perfect tangy punch—we especially loved how lively and balanced the verde tasted. The coco queso and sour cream add a gentle creaminess that softens the acidity without dulling it. Paired with a side of Spanish rice, the dish feels satisfying yet light, making it one of our favorite bites of the meal and a standout for its freshness and flavor.
We couldn’t leave Jajaja Mexicana without trying one of their delicious desserts so we decided on the strawberry tres leches cake, and it was the perfect sweet finale. Light, airy sponge soaked in a luscious trio of plant-based milks created that signature tres leches texture—moist without being heavy. Fresh strawberry and a strawberry cream added a bright, juicy sweetness that balanced the creamy richness beautifully. It’s the kind of dessert that feels indulgent yet still fresh, with every bite melting effortlessly. Of course, it being entirely vegan made it even more impressive, proving that classic desserts can be reimagined without losing any of their magic or satisfaction.
Jajaja Mexicana is without a doubt a NYC spot we’ll be returning to again and again. From the vibrant, flavorful dishes to the inviting atmosphere, every part of the experience felt thoughtfully crafted and genuinely satisfying. It’s rare to find a place that delivers so fully on both creativity and comfort, all while being entirely plant-based. Whether you’re craving bold, familiar flavors or something fresh and exciting, this restaurant truly delivers. It’s the kind of spot you recommend instantly—and one that keeps calling you back for another memorable meal in the city.
