Vegan NYC: Urban Vegan Kitchen

Address | 265 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10011

We love an energizing weekend in New York City—and this weekend we headed out of the Hamptons, easing out of the quiet coastal pace and into the hum of Manhattan, with plans to see family, friends, and colleagues. After a great evening out, we woke early this morning to take in the early spring sun and get in a long morning walk before brunch. Our destination was Urban Vegan Kitchen, a longtime establishment in the NYC plant-based dining scene. Tucked into Chelsea, it strikes that perfect balance between cozy neighborhood charm and thoughtful, elevated vegan comfort food. From the moment we walked in, there was a warmth to the space—welcoming without being overdone, the kind of place that invites you to settle in and stay awhile.

As we looked over the menu, it quickly became clear that choosing would be no easy task. Every dish felt intentional, appealing not just in concept but in execution. Urban Vegan Kitchen has a way of presenting plant-based food that feels both familiar and exciting—comforting classics reimagined with creativity and care.

We started simply, with sparkling water and coffee—an iced coffee with oat milk for me and a hot coffee with oat milk. And it’s worth noting: the coffee was very good. Rich, smooth, and balanced, it didn’t feel like an afterthought, which so often happens at brunch spots. Paired with oat milk, it was the perfect, understated start to the meal.

For our dishes, we chose one sweet and one savory option to share: The Golden Child French Toast and The Get Right Within Burrito—a combination that ended up being as satisfying as it was well-balanced.

The Golden Child French Toast arrived first, and it was immediately inviting. Thick slices of golden-brown bread were dusted with powdered sugar and topped with a vibrant fruit compote, with toasted almonds scattered across the plate. A side of maple syrup completed the presentation. The aroma alone—warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg—set expectations high.

And it delivered. The texture was spot-on: crisp edges giving way to a soft, custardy center. The spices were warming without overpowering, and the fruit compote added a bright, slightly tart contrast that kept each bite balanced. The toasted almonds introduced a delicate crunch, adding another layer of texture that elevated the dish beyond a typical sweet brunch option. It felt indulgent, but also thoughtful—comforting without being heavy.

On the savory side, The Get Right Within Burrito was equally impressive, offering a hearty, flavor-packed counterpart. Wrapped in a soft flour tortilla, it was filled with turmeric rice, black beans, tofuego tofu, Numu mozzarella, avocado, pico de gallo, and chili aioli.

Each ingredient brought something essential to the dish. The turmeric rice added warmth and a subtle earthiness, while the black beans grounded it with richness and protein. The tofuego tofu stood out in particular—well-seasoned, slightly smoky, and deeply flavorful, a reminder of just how dynamic tofu can be when prepared with intention. The Numu mozzarella melted seamlessly into the filling, adding that creamy, cohesive texture that tied everything together.

The avocado offered a cooling contrast, balancing the spices, while the pico de gallo added brightness and freshness. The chili aioli, though, was the finishing touch—bringing a gentle heat and a creamy depth that lingered just enough to keep you going back for another bite.

What made both dishes stand out wasn’t just their flavor, but their balance. Urban Vegan Kitchen doesn’t rely on novelty or imitation for the sake of it. Instead, the food feels fully realized—crafted to be satisfying in its own right, whether or not you follow a plant-based diet.

As we lingered over our meal, the restaurant began to fill, creating a lively but still relaxed atmosphere. There was a mix of locals and visitors, conversations flowing easily, the kind of environment that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment. It felt like a true neighborhood spot—welcoming, familiar, and grounded in good food and good energy.

Brunch here became more than just a meal; it was a pause in the middle of a full weekend—a chance to reconnect, refuel, and enjoy something genuinely delicious before continuing on to see friends and family. It’s these in-between moments that often end up being the most memorable.

In a city as saturated with dining options as New York, it takes something special to stand out. Urban Vegan Kitchen manages to do so not through spectacle, but through consistency and care. The menu is thoughtful, the execution strong, and the experience cohesive from start to finish.

By the time we stepped back outside, the city was fully in motion, the earlier calm replaced by the familiar energy of the day. But we carried that sense of ease with us—the kind that comes from a meal that satisfies on every level.

For anyone exploring vegan dining in New York City, Urban Vegan Kitchen is a standout. Whether you’re fully plant-based or simply curious, it offers a welcoming, flavorful experience that highlights just how compelling vegan cuisine can be—comforting, creative, and deeply satisfying.
