Romanticizing a Nor’easter in the Hamptons
There is a certain kind of magic to a stormy fall day in the Hamptons—especially when you have nowhere you need to be. With football games and homecoming rescheduled we planned for a couple of days at home.
When the recent nor’easter rolled through the East End, we decided to lean into it. Rather than spending the day worrying about the wind and rain, we found ourselves romanticizing the whole experience: apple cider mimosas with fresh apple slices, candles glowing beside a warm bubble bath, maple cinnamon walnuts roasting in the oven, and long glasses of chamomile tea while we listened to the storm outside.
Of course, a nor’easter is not exactly something to take lightly. The wind was powerful, the waves in Sag Harbor were wild, and on our way home from the village, we came across a fallen tree blocking the path—a very real reminder that nature was in charge.
But there was something beautiful about experiencing it all from our little corner of the Hamptons.
This is what I love about the Hamptons in the fall. Once summer winds down, there is more room to slow down and appreciate the quieter side of Hamptons living. Stormy days become an excuse to stay cozy at home, make brunch, light candles, take a bath, or bundle up and go see what the water is doing.
So, yes, we romanticized the nor’easter a little. And honestly, I think that is part of the fun of Hamptons lifestyle in the fall.
Apple Cider Mimosas with Fresh Apples
We started the day with one of my favorite fall drinks: apple cider mimosas.
There is something about apple cider in the fall that immediately makes everything feel seasonal, and adding fresh apple slices to the glasses made these feel just a little more special. We poured the mimosas, settled in, and listened to the wind outside.
A nor’easter suddenly felt a little more like a fall weekend at home.
A Candlelit Bubble Bath with the Windows Open
One of the most unexpectedly relaxing parts of the storm was taking a long bubble bath by candlelight with the windows cracked open.
The combination was perfect. Warm water, candles flickering around the bathroom, and the sound of the wind and rain outside. You could hear the storm without actually having to be out in it.
There is something uniquely cozy about being warm and comfortable indoors while the weather is doing the opposite outside.
It was one of those simple moments that made us appreciate our little corner of the Hamptons in the fall even more.
Roasting Maple Cinnamon Walnuts
Of course, no cozy storm day is complete without something happening in the kitchen.
We roasted walnuts with maple and cinnamon, filling the house with that warm, sweet smell that immediately feels like autumn. They were simple, but exactly the kind of snack I wanted on a stormy day—warm, crunchy, lightly sweet, and perfect with a cup of tea.
Fall in the Hamptons is as much about these little rituals as it is about restaurants, beaches, and beautiful houses.
Walking Along the Sag Harbor Dock
Eventually, we decided we could brave the storm and run a few errands in Sag Harbor village. When we arrived we were drawn to the wild waves and ocean spray coming off the docks and hitting the village streets.
We headed down to the dock, where the weather looked very different from the cozy version we had been enjoying inside. The waves were wild, the boats were rocking, and the harbor had completely transformed.
There is something humbling about standing near the water during a storm. The Hamptons can feel so polished and picturesque, especially during the summer, but moments like this remind you that this is still a coastal community surrounded by the Atlantic.
The water was powerful, the wind was intense, and the boats were moving with every wave.
It was beautiful—but definitely not something to underestimate.
Warm Chamomile Tea in Dainty Glasses
After our walk, coming back inside felt even better.
We made warm chamomile tea and poured it into little dainty glasses, which somehow made the ordinary act of drinking tea feel like part of the occasion.
This is perhaps my favorite part of Hamptons lifestyle in the fall: finding ways to make everyday moments feel special.
A pretty glass. A warm drink. A candle. A blanket. The sound of rain against the windows.
Nothing particularly extravagant—just a little more intentional.
A Cozy Fall Brunch
There is no better excuse for a cozy fall brunch than a stormy morning in the Hamptons. We took our time, enjoyed something warm, and stayed inside a little longer than we normally would. An indulgent savory dish of vegan egg muffins— loaded with herbs, veggies, and a tangy vegan parmesan cheese—as well as sweet dish of pumpkin French toast casserole—topped with cinnamon sugar and drizzled with pure maple syrup.
Summer in the Hamptons is all about being outside, but fall in the Hamptons invites you to appreciate the indoors just as much.
It is slower. Quieter. More relaxed.
And on a stormy day, there is nowhere else I would rather be.
A Reminder of the Power of the Storm
Of course, the romanticized version of the nor’easter only lasted so long.
On our way home from the village, we came across a tree that had fallen directly across the path.
It was a little scary—and definitely humbling.
After spending the day turning the storm into a cozy backdrop for apple cider mimosas, bubble baths, candles, tea, and brunch, seeing the aftermath up close was a reminder of just how powerful the weather actually was.
The Hamptons may be beautiful, but nature is always in charge.
And maybe that was the perfect ending to our stormy fall day.
We got to enjoy the cozy side of a nor’easter while still being reminded to respect it. We came home, settled back in, and listened to the wind from the safety of our house.
Sometimes Hamptons living in the fall is about beach walks, beautiful sunsets, farmers markets, and long lunches. And sometimes it is about staying home, lighting candles, making something warm, and romanticizing the storm outside.
I'll take both.
