Artistic Pizza in Greenwich Village: A Late-Night Vegan Pizza Stop

Artistic Pizza in Greenwich Village: A Late-Night Vegan Pizza Stop

There are some nights in New York when you don't really plan dinner. You leave one neighborhood, decide you're not ready to go home yet, and suddenly find yourself walking through another part of the city looking for something good to eat.

That was exactly how we ended up at Artistic Pizza in Greenwich Village.

We had been in Chelsea for a play reading and, rather than heading straight back to the Hamptons, decided to make a night of it and head downtown. Greenwich Village was still buzzing when we arrived. Students were out, people were walking between restaurants and bars, and the NYU campus was full of that familiar late-night energy that makes the Village feel so distinctly New York.

For Lynette, it was also a little nostalgic. Walking around the NYU area brought her right back to her own graduate-school days at NYU. There is something about Greenwich Village at night that makes the neighborhood feel both completely different and exactly the same as it did years ago. The streets were busy, young people were everywhere, and there was no shortage of places to grab a drink or something to eat.

And since we were looking for a casual late-night dinner, pizza seemed like the obvious choice.

Vegan Pizza in Greenwich Village

One of the reasons we chose Artistic Pizza was the vegan selection. As someone who eats vegan, I'm always happy to find a traditional pizza place that makes vegan pizza more than an afterthought.

Artistic Pizza has a case dedicated specifically to vegan slices, which immediately caught our attention. Instead of having to search through a menu trying to figure out what could be made vegan, there were multiple slices ready to choose from.

That is exactly the kind of thing I appreciate when I'm eating out in New York. Sometimes you just want to walk into a pizza shop, look at the case, and pick what looks good.

We decided to try three different slices so we could get a sense of the vegan options: the vegan "meat" lovers, classic margherita, and buffalo chicken.

And honestly, all three were worth trying.

Vegan "Meat" Lovers Pizza

The vegan "meat" lovers was probably the slice we were most curious about. It had that classic pizzeria appeal — savory toppings, plenty going on, and the kind of combination that feels substantial enough to count as dinner rather than just a snack.

The flavors worked well together, and the crust gave the slice enough structure to hold all those toppings without becoming soggy.

For anyone who misses a classic meat-lovers pizza, this is the sort of vegan version that hits the right notes without trying to reinvent pizza.

Vegan Margherita Pizza

The margherita was much simpler, which made it a good way to really taste the basics.

A good margherita pizza doesn't need a lot. You want a flavorful tomato sauce, vegan cheese, and a good crust, and Artistic Pizza delivers on those fundamentals.

The crust was one of the things we particularly liked. It had a nice texture and enough chew to make it satisfying, while still having that familiar New York pizza-shop feel.

The sauce was flavorful — perhaps a little more generous than necessary for my taste — but the overall combination worked. If you like a saucier slice, you'll probably appreciate it even more.

Vegan Buffalo Chicken Pizza

The buffalo chicken was probably the most fun of the three.

Buffalo-style anything is one of those flavors that works particularly well in vegan cooking because the spicy sauce brings so much of the personality to the dish. The vegan chicken gave the slice some texture and substance, while the buffalo flavor made it distinctly different from the margherita.

It was a good reminder that vegan pizza doesn't have to mean limiting yourself to vegetables and tomato sauce. There are plenty of ways to make a slice feel indulgent and familiar while keeping it completely plant-based.

The Pizza Experience

What I liked most about Artistic Pizza was that it felt like a real New York pizza stop rather than a restaurant that happens to have a vegan option.

That distinction matters.

There are plenty of vegan restaurants in New York where pizza is thoughtfully made, but sometimes you want the experience of walking into a neighborhood pizzeria late at night, looking through the glass case, ordering a few slices, and finding a place to sit down.

Artistic Pizza has that casual, unfussy feeling.

And the location makes it particularly appealing. Greenwich Village is one of my favorite parts of Manhattan for wandering around without much of a plan. You can have dinner, walk around Washington Square Park, stop for coffee or a drink, and spend the evening simply taking in the neighborhood.

On this particular night, we had started in Chelsea for the play reading and ended up downtown, surrounded by NYU students and the usual Village crowd. It was one of those very New York evenings where the destination wasn't necessarily the point. We were just enjoying being in the city.

A Late-Night Pizza Stop

One of the things I love about New York is that dinner doesn't always have to happen at 6:30 or 7:00.

You can go to a play reading, meet friends, walk through several neighborhoods, and eventually decide that pizza sounds perfect. Greenwich Village is especially good for this because it stays lively late into the evening.

For us, Artistic Pizza turned out to be a great way to end the night.

The vegan selection was better than what you typically find at a traditional neighborhood pizza shop, and having an entire case dedicated to vegan slices made ordering easy. We could try several different varieties instead of settling for one vegan option.

The crust was good, the sauce had plenty of flavor, and all three slices had their own personality. The sauce was perhaps a little heavier than I would have preferred, but that's a small criticism, especially when you're eating pizza late at night in Greenwich Village.

And really, sometimes that is exactly what you want.

A good slice. A busy New York street. Students heading home from campus. People meeting friends for drinks. The energy of the Village late at night.

After spending so many years in New York, I still love these spontaneous city evenings. And walking through Greenwich Village after our play reading, surrounded by the energy of NYU, was a nice reminder of why this neighborhood has always felt special to me.

Add in three vegan slices from Artistic Pizza, and it made for a pretty perfect late-night New York dinner.
