Paris Guide: Pizza Popolare

Paris Guide: Pizza Popolare

Address | 111 Rue Réaumur, 75002 Paris, France

At first blush it probably seems odd that a Neapolitan Pizzeria has found its way onto my Paris Guide.  However I would remind you, dear readers, that Paris is a major cosmopolitan city and it stands to reason that it attracts all sorts of good cuisine.  Couple that with the fact that we went on the evening of our wedding vows.  For the post-vow celebrations I have to give Lynette credit for planning an evening that would focus on fun and celebration.  If you have met me in person or followed me for long enough it is no secret that pizza is pretty much at the top of my list for favorite foods.  It's also Lynette's sister's favorite food.  So after touring the Catacombs and our long walk over we went to Pizzeria Popolare.  We choose this because first, during our research phase we saw that it got a lot of great reviews, second, Sabrina and Mike (our co-revelers), had seen a line there every night and were told by their concierge it was the best pizza in Paris, and lastly it has a fun vibe with colorful romantic decor that was perfect to set the tone for the rest of the night.

Properly welcomed with libations and bread we moved on to the menu.  The names of the dishes were entertaining (hot sausage party pizza, or the Kale Middleton salad) and we all had a good laugh.  We placed an order. I always, always order a classic Margherita pizza, and we also had the Lady di Napoli and the Kale Middleton.

The verdict. The restaurant was a really fun scene.  It was packed and a scene of the most fashionable crowd.  You cannot make a reservation so arrive early, like 15 minutes before the doors open, as we did, to get in.  The
pizza itself was good. I liked the toppings and the sauce.  The crust however, was not the best Neapolitan style crust I've had.  As an example, for my birthday on Saturday we went to PUBLIC by Jean-Georges and ordered their black truffle pizza.  The crust there was just perfect.  Thin and soft with a slight crunchy texture on top and thin and floppy in the center.  Popolare on the other hand was a bit too thick and chewy. So, if you need a pizza fix in Paris Pizzeria Popolare is worth having a meal at but it probably won't be the most mind blowing Neapolitan pizza you've had.  The vibe was fun and the service was good.
